its like any industry, they publicize their "stars" and leave the rest to wallow...we need to think up a good old fashioned scandal, maybe organise a whole bunch of orblers to throw copies of your book at the pope mobile or something!!!!! (P.S. I hope I don't get arrested for "annoyance" for suggesting such a joke)
P.S. there is a book called Geurilla Marketing (might be able to find free info about it online) it lists over 100 really effective FREE/V CHEAP ways to promote your "brand"
Well I know I've been quiet lately, but I for one would love to see you on Oprah Jo... So I took it upon myself to write the famous talk show host on what a fantastic writer I think you are, how fascinating your life is, what a great author and inspiration you are to many of us and how great it would be for Miss Winfrey to have you on her show with her book club for things without a name, or secret mother's club whichever. Anyhoo nothing ventured nothing gained, you are a star in my book! Keep with it and don't let the process slow down your drive to succeed.
Hey Jo,
I saw the review in the SMH. There was also one in one of the Sydney papers last weekend - small but positive. Did you see it?
Marketing and publicity seems to be the evil side of writing (from a writer's perspective). Given that many writers are prone to shyness and introspection it really must be a pain in the butt. We might see the publicity-inflicted scars on yours when you make the cover of Art Monthly.

Hello lovely JP, you have been quiet honey - hope all has been well with you. Now really, you wrote to Oprah? 'bout me? you are a darling woman. Thank you for your sweet faith, and for taking the time to do that. If she flies me out to the US, can I come via Canada for a hug?
Jayne, whatever adjectives apply to me, shy is not one of them, hell I am happy to talk to anyone at anytime, and really love the publicity side of things - I used to be a law lecturer and had to face crowds of hundreds - and boys in their late teens and early twenties are an unforgiving lot so I have a very thick skin when it comes to being laughed at. And, modesty aside, I'd bare it all on the cover of Art weekly if it was a good way to drum up some scandal, but somehow it doesn't seem appropriate to promote a book about domestic violence and gender violence ... what do you think??
That is so funny - and you are also spot on about the unforgiving nature of the young! I lectured at a private business college for a year and you never know when there might be a little eruption of whispering or possibly giggling. Not good for the faint-hearted (or paranoid)! So if that part of the publicity is cool is it the "sorry, it’s not a good time for fiction." part? Cause that would shit me too. And what does it mean? Is it tied to the economy? What is it a good time for? When is a good time for fiction exactly.
Poor you, Jo. But if the lovely JP works some magic you could bare your butt while jumping on Oprah's couch!!! Hmmm..but, yes, I think you are right - not so appropriate. And you only need bare your intellect to thrill us in great numbers.
Jayne
Hmmmm, take a copy of your book and beat the crap out of a mugger and post it on Utube...that'll get you some press or you can donate some for a charity auction and stab a heckler with a pen....
