Compassion for child pornographers? (LINK)

Few things these days make my blood boil.
I am not a prude. I once posed nude for a photographer who was doing an exhibition on the female body. I believe we are all bisexual, some more than others. Honestly, I don’t mind how people choose to masturbate and what turns them on.
But I am sickened by Power. Patrick Power. Former NSW deputy-crown prosecutor. Caught with child pornography on his computer. He received an eight-month sentence, reduced to six months.
Look, I’m sure he’s a really nice guy. I’ve no doubt he makes a great casserole, files his tax returns and phones his mother on Mother’s Day. But, and I'm prepared to admit this is hard core - I just can't look past his one little personality flaw. I could never socialize with, trust or want to be in the same room as someone who 'satisfies a long term sexual fantasy' by possessing files such as '... young boy tied, gets raped, begs for them to stop,' or (pedo gay) man fucks five yo Thai boy.mpg. Sorry. It’s a prejudice on my part. Pervert-aphobia.
We all have secret forbidden desires. I certainly wouldn’t want my personal fantasies on parade for all to see. Imagine what would happen to all those married men who get off on homosexual pornography. No need for the wife to know. Just a harmless little jerking off at the computer screen. I have no problem with this. And, let’s face it, there is no way for any of us to know whether the people we socialize with around our dinner tables do get turned on at the thought of raping small people or animals. Most people afflicted with these fantasies are discreet when it comes to admitting them. Maybe Power was not so much indiscreet as unlucky – computer illiterate. He got caught.
Should we feel sorry for Power? After all, he has a problem. Maybe he gave himself a fright. Maybe he was sitting at work one day when all of a sudden, he had this fantasy. Involving small children and sex. He may have thought, ‘Shit, I’m a sick pervert. How could I get turned on by that?’ What should he have done? Taken himself to therapy? Can people who get turned on by these things get fixed? If he never acted out on any person, but simply masturbated to child pornography, should we congratulate him for his strength of character?
What if he sent a postcard to PostSecret saying, ‘I fantasize about having sex with little boys.’ Would that have been acceptable?
I am not a member of the Vanilla sex Gestapo. I don’t believe in censorship as an answer to the problems in society and I certainly don’t advocate policing peoples’ fantasies. In the realm of the imagination, we should all be free to indulge our most shameful taboos.
But using child pornography goes beyond the realm of fantasy.
Every child photographed or filmed has been raped or sexually forced.
Every user of child porn is a witness to that. An accomplice.
Does anyone have any good suggestions about how we should deal with people like Power who ‘just can’t help themselves’?

Mandatory life sentence. Period. These people can't be reformed. Let the other inmates dole out the justice on a daily basis. Anyone who ruins a child's life like that should never breathe fresh air again.
