What can't you live without?

Tom Robbins, author of Even Cowgirls Get the Blues wrote that there are four things a writer needs to do before writing:
a) spend half an hour doing exercise – because we spend so much time in our heads, we need to get into our bodies;
b) spend half an hour reading beautiful poetry – because writers need to be in love with words;
c) spend half an hour looking at the clouds – they are a source of deeper inspiration;
d) spend half an hour looking at pornography – because you should always write with a hard-on, even if you’re a woman.
Tom Robbins obviously isn’t a mother. Who has two hours of free time just to PREPARE for writing?
There is one thing and one thing only I need to get in gear for writing. Actually, to get in gear for living. I NEED coffee. Look, I admit it, I am a caffeine addict. Until I’ve had that first coffee in the morning, my brain feels squishy and vague. I don’t understand the ins and outs of what caffeine does or does not do to you. And to be honest, I don’t care. It revs my motor. It marks the start of my day. It holds me up. And it tastes so good.
I once tried those ‘detox’ diets that makes you give up everything worth living for in favour of things that go ‘crunch’ and don’t leave a film of fat in your mouth. They make you give up coffee. After exactly two daylight hours, the blinding headache starts to interfere with your judgment, not to mention your joie de vivre. The diets say ‘just let the toxins work their way through your body.’ But who needs it? I say, feed the toxins, get rid of the headache.
I have considered that if I just saved the money I spend each day on a coffee we could probably pay off our mortgage ten years sooner. But really, life without coffee would be a sad and desperate affair.
I don’t smoke. I hardly drink. I don’t gamble. I say no to drugs.
But when it comes to coffee, I confess: I’m hooked, addicted, and intend to stay that way until my wrinkled old lips sigh their last earthly breath.

Hmm...
I always make sure I have a quiet space. Without silence, I just can't think.
Can't have coffee - it makes me hyper and I can't think properly when I am hyper...

I'm with you Jo - I don't mind the toxins, they have a long term lease in my body and aren't bad tenants unless I try to make them move... in which case they start trashing the joint. So I say - let them stay. If the place starts falling down, then I'll look into it again.
I also NEED books. Absolutely.
