Looking for fairies to spread some magic (LINK)
April 28th 2008 02:18
Remember the movie Pay it Forward with Kevin Spacey? The premise was that instead of paying someone back, you do something wonderful for someone and in return, you ask them to do something for someone else, and so on and so on until we’ve changed the DNA of the planet and there are no more wars, terrorism, greed and general degenerative human behaviour.
I try to live my life this way as much as I can even when it seems counter-intuitive and quite apparent that some people think it is stupid to do something when there’s nothing in it for them. I am a big believer in karma. And quite selfishly, there is an adrenalin-rush one gets from random acts of kindness that selfish behaviour just doesn't generate. I remind myself to make chicken soup for the sick, or help someone move furniture when I am feeling sorry for myself and need to step out of the pigpen of my own self-pity. Bizarrely I always feel better when I stop focusing on my own crap and try to help someone with theirs.
So ideas such as the one I’m about to describe, really work for me. And I’m inviting all Orblers to participate.
A friend of mine in South Africa who runs a network called Quality Life, is hosting a Good Fairy Week © where you can get to make someone’s wish come true.
How do you play?
•On the 6th of June, you'll receive the name of a wisher (someone who has made three wishes)
•For a specified week (13-20 June), you will become their anonymous good fairy. (You will have to know your wisher's identity so you can lavish magic on them)
•You will get some useful hints about your wisher to help you.
•Your role is to try to make your wisher's dreams come true. If not feasible, practical or economical, you can find some way to make them happy.
•There are endless ways in which you can be generous: if you have money to spend, you can send chocolates, flowers, mobile masseurs, dinner, movie, music or book vouchers. If you have time, you can offer to babysit, clean their home for them… if you have practical skills, you can offer those.. to fix things that are broken, or to design a website for them… if you have a good network, you can offer to introduce them to people or to forward their work to relevant players…
•if you play, you commit to being as generous and creative as possible
And as your reward for being a good fairy, you also get to be a wisher too. Anyone who plays gets to be both a fairy and a wisher. It’s kind of like a Kris Kringle writ large where there are no booby prizes.
If we get enough people to play in Sydney, we can organize a ‘FAIRY REVEAL’ breakfast / drinks where we can get to meet our anonymous fairies. Or if you prefer to be anonymous, that is fine too.
Okay, so how do you play?
Send an email to debby@qualitylife.co.za with:
Your name
Your work address
Your home address (physical address)
Contact numbers
Some details about the things you enjoy and that make your life meaningful
Three wishes (give a range of realistic and fantastic, blue-sky type stuff)
Three gifts you have to offer someone else
The game is open to anyone who wants to play.
Closing date for entering is 16 May as there is a lot of matching of wishers to fairies that needs to be done.
If you do decide to play, please let me know by sending me a personal message through Orble.
Important dates to remember:
Deadline for entry: 16 May
Identify wishers to fairies: 6 June
Game runs: 13 - 20 June
Breakfast presentation: 20 June
Identities revealed: 20 June

Yes, I know what you mean by those people thinking why do something when there is nothing in return. Sometimes I find they don't realise, what they get in return is simply a good warm feeling in their hearts as well as another person's true appreciation, something that money cannot buy.
