Manifestation - the short film that never made it to the Stinkwater 24 Film Festival
April 21st 2008 08:39
A few months ago I posted the sad saga of how a group of dedicated actors, directors, producers, sound specialists, editors and cameramen spent a day in the rain to produce a short film over 24 hours for the Coogee Film Festival, Stinkwater 24. And that we missed the deadline by about half an hour.
Finally, we've managed to download the movie I wrote, Manifestation to youtube, and here it is for those who have nothing better to do for five minutes.
Two things to look out for: the director and I had a little disagreement about the opening scene. In my script, Bethany is not looking through the window of the travel agency holding onto a mango. The way I wrote it, she is looking longingly through the window of the travel agency, then she walks past Malony's the green grocer, where she sensuously puts a mango to her lips. The director wanted to conflate these two scenes. I protested it made Bethany look like a loony tune, but I lost the battle. So, ahem... forgive the opening scene. It makes me cringe too.
Secondly, look out for a very uncomfortable me sitting in the cafe reading a copy of my new book Things Without A Name. I had wanted the camera to focus on the butterfly on the cover of my book (given the whole butterfly theme of the script) and not on me. As my kids point out, 'You look ridiculous mum...'

I'm presuming by now you know it's OK. I am able to watch it when I click on "Manifestation" (although it is spelled "Manifastation" on that site I think.)
I have kids breathing down my neck so shall have a leisurely look later. Have only watched a couple of minutes and I'm intrigued. Plus, your male character is a writer!! I'm going to have to mention you on my website.
(And, he has a copy of Writers On Writing beside him which is the origin of the pun in my blog's title - in case anyone cares haha)
Shall probably post again after my further viewing.

I loved all the butterflies - yours included (you don't look ridiculous!) and the song at the end was fantastic.
The mango scene was a bit weird, I agree... and the end bit... she's not really an actress, is she... lol.
Congrats - I would't know where to start in making a short!

Michaelie, you're very sweet. I felt utterly ridiculous sitting there pretending to read my own book, and I had to sit like that for over an hour while they filmed that scene. I'd be the worst extra on a movie set. It's so boring.
How stunning is that song at the end. Initially I wanted Jevetta Steele' singing 'I am calling you.' (from Bhagdad Cafe) but we couldn't secure permission to use it. So that final song is an original by a friend of the producer. Beautiful, isn't it?
Michaelie, this was my first attempt at being part of making a short film and I learned a lot, and would do things slightly differently next time round.

I finally got a chance to watch Manifestation. It's beautiful. The script is so lyrical and the film has an almost haunting atmosphere. I really love the scene where The Girlfriend pops her head through the window and asks the writer when he's going to be finished - it was a great depiction of the sometimes awkward collision of worlds.
The final song truly is fabulous and underscores the atmosphere. Well done to you guys. But what a shame it didn't make the deadline. But it sounds as though you will be making another film for Stinkwater 24...

Not a bad effort for 24 hours. I like films that make you think. And I think the short film format has the luxury of being not complete. What I mean by that is that most feature films (well Hollywood ones anyway) feel the need to absolutely bash the point over the audience's head.
The line "sometimes she feels more real that my life" is great.
I agree with the others, the song at the end really makes it.
I've been involved in a couple of short films. Always learning Jo.
Mr M heard a saying that could easily be applied to any creative outlet.
The saying goes "A film is never finished, it is only ever abandoned".
Love & stuff

How cold must have the actress felt? Oh my goodness.
