Reasons for writing (LINK)

Annie Sprinkle, a US porn film star, performer and sex researcher lists 101 Uses for Sex or why Sex is So Important. Her list includes:
• Sex as a sedative. It helps you get to sleep.
• Sex as meditation.
• Sex to cure an asthma attack. I saved a man once.
• Sex to relieve headaches. Even migraines.
• Sex as a cure for writer’s block.
....and on the list goes.
It’s a pretty comprehensive catalogue, and certainly inspires one to stretch the limits of the tired old reasons we have for doing things which measures up as pretty uninspired by comparison. Whether your joy is in journaling, writing poetry, blogging or writing stories, you may have reasons for writing that are original and imaginative. Here are some of mine:
1. because there’s nothing on tv
2. because there’s no-one to talk to
3. to give shape to an emotion so I can feel it clearly
4. to avoid housework
5. to confess something I can’t tell anyone
6. to clear the cobwebs from my mind
7. to pass time
8. because words move me
9. to stop the bleeding
10. because I’m not qualified to do anything else
11. to find a way into my pain
12. to release a constriction
13. because I love it
14. to take a pulsing phrase and pour light into it
15. because I cannot not write
16. in the hope of making a buck somewhere down the line
17. because stories are everywhere
18. to hold a space inside me
19. to connect with others
20. as a way of reaching for emotional truth

I write because I have too many thoughts in my head that I have to get them out so I can sleep.
And just to make sure that I can make myself understood because I often think I make no sense.

Know what you mean. Do you get up like I do, sometimes in the middle of the night when a thought hops around in your head? It mostly happens when I'm in the middle of a book, then my hubby says 'Uh-oh, mum's gone...'
I also write to work things out, to understand what I'm feeling. Nothing there so dark or treacherous, it can't be written out of me. Have you read Julia Cameron's book The Right to Write? I love that book.
Thanks for your comment

No I haven't read that book, but I'll look into it.
I have notebooks everywhere. I have one in my handbag, on my desk, next to my bed.
I also have notebooks for different things. I'm notebook mad.
I recently went away with a group of friends for the weekend and had a panic attack because I didn't have a notebook in my bag and only one pen. What if that pen ran out? My first port of call when we went out shopping was the newsagents.
Too many ideas.

When I go running, I stuff a tiny little notebook that comes with a little attached pencil in my back pocket. And I ALWAYS have reason to take it out - I find a get a lot of ideas when I go walking or running - does that happen to you too?

Usually when I'm exercising I'm imagining I'm the rock star singing whatever song is playing on my IPod.
But my best ideas come from listening to conversations around me.
