Know what you mean. Do you get up like I do, sometimes in the middle of the night when a thought hops around in your head? It mostly happens when I'm in the middle of a book, then my hubby says 'Uh-oh, mum's gone...'
I also write to work things out, to understand what I'm feeling. Nothing there so dark or treacherous, it can't be written out of me. Have you read Julia Cameron's book The Right to Write? I love that book.
No I haven't read that book, but I'll look into it.
I have notebooks everywhere. I have one in my handbag, on my desk, next to my bed.
I also have notebooks for different things. I'm notebook mad.
I recently went away with a group of friends for the weekend and had a panic attack because I didn't have a notebook in my bag and only one pen. What if that pen ran out? My first port of call when we went out shopping was the newsagents.
We have EXACTLY the same disorder, you and I. If I had to gather up all my notebooks - used, half-used, in-contemplation-of-being used, I am sure I'd have over 100. The allure of that new book, is so thrilling, like a story waiting to be told.
When I go running, I stuff a tiny little notebook that comes with a little attached pencil in my back pocket. And I ALWAYS have reason to take it out - I find a get a lot of ideas when I go walking or running - does that happen to you too?

I write because I have too many thoughts in my head that I have to get them out so I can sleep.
And just to make sure that I can make myself understood because I often think I make no sense.

Usually when I'm exercising I'm imagining I'm the rock star singing whatever song is playing on my IPod.
But my best ideas come from listening to conversations around me.
