The light of Benazir Bhutto has gone from this world
December 27th 2007 22:39
I don’t know what else to do. So I’m writing. This is my weeping.
It’s strange how you can not know someone, just know of them, admire them and think, ‘Thank heavens for the courage that pulses in your veins.’ Pakistan is far away, a place I will in all likelihood never visit. So why should it affect me so that Benazir Bhutto, the opposition leader in that country was assassinated yesterday at the hand of a suicide bomber after speaking at a rally where she was campaigning for democracy?
Perhaps because she was one of the clear pure voices of democracy in this mad world of extremists and fanatics. And that she was one of the only female leaders in a patriarchal world of politics. And perhaps because despite the illusion that each of us lives a life apart, churning out a solitary existence and agonizing in private about our personal circumstances, we are all linked in this life by invisible threads. She voiced the hopes of all people who long for freedom and equality. She embodied the courage so many of us are fearsome to express. She spoke up when it was safer for her to be silent.
My heart is heavy today with this news.
Rest in peace, Benazir Bhutto.
The light of the world has dimmed with your passing.
